Celebration of 3rd International Day of Yoga in the World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu.

 

International Day of Yoga 2017 was celebrated in the iconic and historic citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of Peru with the participation of yoga practitioners and enthusiasts from all over Peru and abroad.  Both Machu Picchu and Yoga are recognized by UNESCO as common heritage of the world. Earlier in the day, world famous Master Sudarshan Pattnaik added to the excitement by making Sand Art of the event on the beaches of Puri with a message in Spanish conveying the significance of the union of two important heritages of the world for celebrating the International Day of Yoga.

 


 

The IDY celebrations started with a welcome address by Jose Fernando Astete Director of the Machu Picchu Archaeological site. Sandeep Chakravorty, Ambassador of India to Peru said that both Machu Picchu and Yoga are invaluable world heritage and legacy for humankind. It is only befitting that the two should come together on the International Day of Yoga. The Common Yoga Protocol translated into Quechua languages was released on the occasion. A demonstration of Muyuchi (Andean Yoga)  was done by Juan Pablo II School of Cusco,  and demonstration of Isha Upa Yoga by representatives of Isha Foundation was conducted. Dr. Aayam Gupta, Yoga Teacher of the Embassy and Dr. Jose Pinado conducted the Common Yoga Protocol. Alejandro Martinez of Art of Living Foundation concluded with a meditation session.

 

This being the peak tourist season for visit to Machu Picchu, the international visitors touring the historic citadel also joined the celebrations enthusiastically.
