India and Peru agree to deepen bilateral relations.


The first meeting of the India-Peru Joint Commission was held in Lima on June 21, 2017. The Indian delegation was led by Ms. Preeti Saran, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs and included Mr. Ashok Das, Joint Secretary (Latin America and Caribbean), Mr. Sandeep Chakravorty, Ambassador of India to Peru, Dr. D. Gowrisankar, Deputy Director, International Cooperation, Indian Space Research Organization, Mr. Richhpal Singh, Under Secretary (LAC) and Mr. Arup Kumar Saha, Head of Chancery and Commercial Representative, Embassy of India.  The Peruvian delegation was led by Mr. Nestor Popolizio, Vice Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru and included several representatives of various Ministries and agencies of Peru.

The meeting started with a one-to-one meeting between the two Heads of Delegation which was followed by delegation level discussions. In the meeting, in addition to undertaking a comprehensive review of bilateral, regional and multilateral issues, both sides discussed the way forward for further deepening of the relations. The two sides strongly emphasized the need to promote, strengthen and diversify bilateral relations between the two countries in the political, economic & commercial, defence, science & technology, education, agriculture and minerals & energy areas.  The two sides also discussed multilateral issues such as reform of the United Nations Security Council, recent election of Peru as a Non-Permanent Member of the UNSC and participation of India as an Observer of the Pacific Alliance.  During the meeting, Secretary(East) also handed over a cheque for India´s contribution of US$ 150,000 towards the reconstruction work of the areas in Northern Peru affected by the heavy rains and floods due to the El Niño phenomenon.

On the occasion of the Joint Commission meeting, an Agreement on India-Peru Cooperation in New & Renewable Energy was signed by Ms. Preeti Saran Secretary(East) and Mr. Gonzalo Francisco Alberto Tamayo Flores, Minister of Energy & Mines of Peru and an Agreement between the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) of India and the Peruvian National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI)  for access to the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library of the CSIR by INDECOPI was signed by Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty and Mr. Ivo Gagliuffi Piercechi, Chairman of the Board of Director of INDECOPI. Peru also joined the International Solar Alliance by signing the Framework Agreement on the establishment of the International Solar Alliance
