Deadline for Gratis Conversion from PIO Card to OCI Card: December 31, 2017

Government of India had discontinued the issue of PIO cards since January 2015 and since then has extended the facility of conversion of PIO cards to OCI cards on voluntary and gratis basis.  The last date for conversion on gratis basis is December 31, 2017

It may be noted that the erstwhile PIO cards are hand written whereas the new OCI cards are machine readable.  The Ministry of External Affairs of India has now been informed that from October 2018, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will accept only machine readable travel documentsThe existing PIO cards which are hand written will, therefore, become invalid travel documents.  Hence, it is necessary that all PIO cardholders obtain machine readable OCI cards in lieu of the existing hand written PIO cards before October 2018 to avoid any inconvenience.

In order to take advantage of getting such PIO cards converted into machine readable OCI Cards on a gratis basis, all PIO cardholders are advised to get these converted before December 31, 2017. The deadline for such gratis conversion will not be extended further.  It may be noted that no additional documentation except copies of the foreign passport and the existing PIO card is required. Application may be made online at https://passport.gov.in/oci/ and thereafter submitted to the Embassy of India, Lima for processing.
