A joint Brahmo Samaj and Unitarian service was organised on September 28, 2008 at Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bristol to commemorate the 175th death anniversary of Raja Ram Mohun Roy, as also to celebrate the restoration of the ‘Chhatri’ built in his memory. The ceremony was attended by the High Commissioner of India, Mr. S.S. Mukherjee, the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Christopher Davies and a select gathering of Unitarians, Brahmos, intellectuals, academicians, media personalities and admirers of Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
The ‘Chhatri’ of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, which is a listed monument, was erected at Arnos Vale Cemetery in 1843, ten years after the demise of the Raja in Bristol. William Princep of the Calcutta family was among the figures who helped design the mausoleum built in the style of a Chhatri which was funded by Dwarkanath Tagore.
It is with the sustained efforts of the High Commission of India in London, Municipal Corporation of Kolkata, Bristol City Council, Brahmo Samaj, Mrs. Carla Contractor of the Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust and Mr. Aditya Poddar that funds were mobilised to repair and restore the ‘Chhatri’ to keep it in pristine condition as it is a place of pilgrimage, particularly for the followers of the Raja. |
