Marriage Certificate

The Embassy does not issue original marriage certificates / certification of registration of marriages for marriages held in India. Such certificates can only be issued by the Registrar of Marriages, normally present at the district level in India, according to the marriage laws of the particular religion.

However, based on entries already in the passport, the Embassy can issue a certificate of marriage in case the marriage has not been registered. The following documents are required:

Miscellaneous application form [115 kb. *.doc] to be filled and signed in four places including the declaration, without which no service will be rendered.

Passports, in original, of both husband and wife (the passport should contain the spouse's name).

Fee of US$ 10.

Warning: Since it is not obligatory to register marriages in India, but is obligatory in both Peru and Bolivia, sometimes the Embassy's certificate of marriage is not accepted as sufficient in these countries. In such cases, the Embassy can issue a certificate stating that registration of marriages is not compulsory in India. The fee for such a certificate is US$ 10.

Important note: In cases where the marriage itself is to be performed in Peru / Bolivia, the marriage can be solemnized in the presence of the consular officer and registered in the Embassy. A certificate of Registration of Marriage is then issued by the Embassy, which can be used as a marriage certificate. The procedure for this is given in the section Registration of Marriages However, for local requirements, it may be necessary even for Indian couples to register their marriage with the local authorities.

However, for other Indian nationals, based on entries made in the passport, the Embassy can issue a birth certificate. The following documents are required:

Miscellaneous application form [115 kb. *.doc], to be filled and signed in four places including the declaration, without which no service will be rendered.
