Registration of Birth

Births of Indian nationals taking place in Peru / Bolivia can be registered in the Embassy and a corresponding birth certificate is issued (for other birth certificates, see section on "Birth Certificates").

Note: Registration of births is only done for Indian citizens. As per Indian citizenship laws, a child born abroad, whose father or mother is an Indian citizen at time of birth of the child, can obtain Indian citizenship by descent. However, the registration has to be done within 7 years of birth. In case the parents themselves are not Indian citizens by birth (i.e they are citizens by descent, naturalization, etc), the registration has to be done within a year of birth.

The following documents are required:

Miscellaneous application form [115 kb. *.doc] to be filled and signed in four places including the declaration, without which no service will be rendered.

Passport of father or mother as the case may be, in original.

Some identity document of the other parent (passport, DNI, carnet, etc).

Birth certificate issued by the hospital/municipal authority/registrar of births and deaths.

Fee of US$ 20.

Warning : As per Peruvian law, any child born in Peru must have a Peruvian passport till age of 18, when the child is allowed to choose Peruvian or foreign nationality. A child born to Indian parents in Peru and obtaining a Peruvian passport, can opt for an Indian passport at the age of 18 after renouncing his Peruvian citizenship. For this, the birth of the child must have been registered with the Embassy.

Thus, before applying for an Indian passport for a child, parents are therefore requested to check with the Peruvian Immigration to avoid subsequent problems.

Registration of Marriage

The Embassy can only register marriages that are held in Peru or Bolivia. However, the marriage must be between two Indian nationals and the marriage must be solemnized in the presence of the consular officer. A certificate of Registration of Marriage is then issued by the Embassy, which can be used as a marriage certificate. However, for local requirements, it may be necessary even for Indian couples to register their marriage with the local authorities.

Applicants are requested to contact the Embassy directly for more details of solemnizing of marriages.

In case of marriages held in India, the Embassy does not issue original marriage certificates / certification of registration. Further details are given in the section "CMarriage Certificate ".
