Dear Appuni Ramesh,

UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF NON-VIOLENCE – AN EVENT TO BE OFFICIATED BY DR. BALAJI SADASIVAN, SENIOR MINISTER OF STATE, MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

United States President Barack Obama says Mahatma Gandhi is his inspiration. “In my life, I have always looked to Mahatma Gandhi as an inspiration, because he embodies the kind of transformational change that can be made when ordinary people come together to do extraordinary things”, said President Obama.

The United Nations General Assembly has decided to observe the International Day of Non-Violence each year on 2 October – the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who helped lead India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

The Assembly, “desiring to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence,” invites States, UN bodies, regional and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and individuals to commemorate the Day, including through education and public awareness.

Throughout his life, Mahatma Gandhi advocated non-violence and influenced many great leaders including Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu. “He (Mahatma Gandhi) inspired Dr. King (Martin Luther) so if it hadn’t been for the non-violent movement in India, you might not have seen the same non-violent movement for civil rights here in the US”, said President Obama.

GOPIO (Global Organization of People of Indian Origin) and Global Indian International School invite you to the commemoration of the International Day of Non-Violence on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
